Cape Hatteras
National Seashore -- "Stretched over
70 miles of barrier islands, Cape Hatteras National Seashore is a
fascinating combination of natural and cultural resources, and
provides a wide variety of recreational opportunities. Once dubbed
the "Graveyard of the Atlantic" for its treacherous currents,
shoals, and storms, Cape Hatteras has a wealth of history relating
to shipwrecks, lighthouses, and the U.S. Lifesaving Service. These
dynamic islands provide a variety of habitats and are a valuable
wintering area for migrating waterfowl. The park's fishing and
surfing are considered the best on the east coast. Click the "In
Depth" button to the right for more detailed
information."
Grand
Canyon -- "The Grand Canyon is more
than a great chasm carved over millennia through the rocks of the
Colorado Plateau. It is more than an awe-inspiring view. It is more
than a pleasuring ground for those who explore the roads, hike the
trails, or float the currents of the turbulent Colorado River.
"This canyon is a gift that transcends what we experience. Its
beauty and size humble us. Its timelessness provokes a comparison to
our short existence. In its vast spaces we may find solace from our
hectic lives. The Grand Canyon we visit today is a gift from past
generations."
Mount
Rushmore -- "The four figures carved
in stone on Mount Rushmore represent the first 150 years of American
history. The birth of our nation was guided by the vision and
courage of George Washington. Thomas Jefferson always had dreams of
something bigger, first in the words of the Declaration of
Independence and later in the expansion of our nation through the
Louisiana Purchase. Preservation of the union was paramount to
Abraham Lincoln but a nation where all men were free and equal was
destined to be. At the turn of the Twentieth Century Theodore
Roosevelt saw that in our nation was the possibility for greatness.
Our nation was changing from a rural republic to a world power. The
ideals of these presidents laid a foundation for our nation as solid
as the rock from which their figures are carved.
"Each man possessed great skills and leadership of the brand our
nation needed for the times. Today millions of visitors come to see
Mount Rushmore and gain inspiration from these four great
men."
Niagara Falls -- "There's so much to explore
and discover at Niagara Falls State Park, from the historical and
geological, to the wonders of nature. Enjoy a scenic walk along the
Niagara River Gorge, visit our huge Aquarium, dine at the newly
renovated Top of the Falls Restaurant, or bring the kids to our new
Discovery Center featuring lots of activities to make education fun
and fascinating.
Niagara Falls, New York, USA."
The
Alamo -- "More than 2.5 million people a year visit the 4.2
acre complex known worldwide as "The Alamo." Most come to see the
old mission where a small band of Texans held out for thirteen days
against the centralist army of General Antonio López de Santa Anna.
Although the Alamo fell in the early morning hours of March 6, 1836,
the death of the Alamo Defenders has come to symbolize courage and
sacrifice for the cause of Liberty. The memories of James Bowie,
David Crockett, and William B. Travis are as powerful today as when
the Texan Army under Sam Houston shouted "Remember the Alamo!" as it
routed Santa Anna at the battle of San Jacinto on April 21,
1836.
"The Alamo has been managed by the Daughters of the Republic of
Texas since 1905. Located on Alamo Plaza in downtown San Antonio,
Texas, the Alamo represents nearly 300 years of history. Three
buildings - the Shrine, Long Barrack Museum, and Gift Museum - house
exhibits on the Texas Revolution and Texas History. Visitors are
welcome to stroll through the beautiful Alamo Gardens. Just a short
walk from the River Walk, the Alamo is a "must see" for all who come
to San Antonio."
Yellowstone -- "Long
before any recorded human history in Yellowstone, a massive volcanic
eruption spewed an immense volume of ash that covered all of the
western U.S., much of the Midwest, northern Mexico and some areas of
the eastern Pacific. The eruption dwarfed that of Mt. St. Helens in
1980 and left a caldera 30 miles wide by 45 miles long.
"That climactic event occurred about 640,000 years ago, and was
one of many processes that shaped Yellowstone National Park--a
region once rumored to be "the place where hell bubbles up."
Geothermal wonders, such as Old Faithful, are evidence of one of the
world's largest active volcanoes. These spectacular features bemused
and befuddled the park's earliest visitors, and helped lead to the
creation of the world's first national park.
"Fur trappers' fantastic tales of cauldrons of bubbling mud and
roaring geysers sending steaming plumes skyward made their way back
east. Several expeditions were sent to investigate, opening the West
to further exploration and exploitation. In 1871, Ferdinand Hayden
led an expedition that included artist Thomas Moran and photographer
William H. Jackson. They brought back images that helped convince
Congress that the area known as Yellowstone needed to be protected
and preserved.
"In 1872, President Ulysses S. Grant signed a law declaring that
Yellowstone would forever be "dedicated and set apart as a public
park or pleasuring ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the
people."
Yosemite -- "Yosemite
National Park embraces a spectacular tract of mountain-and-valley
scenery in the Sierra Nevada, which was set aside as a national park
in 1890. The park harbors a grand collection of waterfalls, meadows,
and forests that include groves of giant sequoias, the world's
largest living things.
Highlights of the park include Yosemite Valley, and
its high cliffs and waterfalls; Wawona's history center and historic
hotel; the Mariposa Grove, which contains hundreds of ancient giant
sequoias; Glacier Point's (summer-fall) spectacular view of Yosemite
Valley and the high country; Tuolumne Meadows (summer-fall), a large
subalpine meadow surrounded by mountain peaks; and Hetch Hetchy, a
reservoir in a valley considered a twin of Yosemite Valley."
